Nicola Lussana Takes the Helm at Seven. One Media: ProSiebenSat.1 Bets on a European Future

In a strategic leadership decision aimed at harmonising with its wider European strategy, ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE (P7S1) has named Nicola Lussana as Chairman of the Management Board and Chief Executive Officer of its advertising-sales division, Seven. One Media, effective immediately as of 28 October 2025.

Strategic Context

Seven. One Media is P7S1’s core revenue pillar for its German-speaking markets (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and central to its advertising, digital monetisation and data-driven campaign businesses. The business is currently being repositioned to operate not only domestically but pan-European. Lussana’s appointment is specifically connected with that aim.

As outlined in the press release, the restructuring also includes top-level changes among senior management:

Markus Messerer is appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO) in charge of operations, tech, transformation and DACH-region business.

Lennart Harendza is appointed Chief Revenue Officer (CRO), responsible for agency and client sales, including creative and sales support functions.

Why This Move Matters

European expansion: The acquisition indicates that P7S1 is seeking Seven. One Media not just as a local German-language sales outlet but as part of an extended European ecosystem. CEO Marco Giordani says in the press release that Lussana’s arrival represents “an important step in enhancing the company’s presence in the German-speaking territory and beyond and driving ProSiebenSat.1’s long-term industrial growth strategy.”

Cross-media sophistication: Lussana has more than 25 years of media and entertainment leadership experience, including extensive know-how in advertising, content, digital and cross-media monetization. He has served as Managing Director at Italian agency Publitalia ’80, CEO at Mediamond, and member of the Board at Publieurope.

This competence is probably designed to allow Seven. One to more effectively integrate TV, digital, data and programmatic sales — meeting the fragmentation challenge and changing advertiser needs.

Renewal of operations: The organisational reorganisation allows for more targeted leadership: COO to operate operations/tech/regions, CRO to operate sales, and CEO to lead commercial vision and European growth. Such a structure facilitates speeding up transformation and responsiveness in a rapidly moving ad business.

Signal during ownership transition: This hiring comes on the heels of P7S1’s deeper governance reforms following its takeover by MediaForEurope N.V. (MFE). Part of some media speculation is that the Italian-led consortium is more and more consolidating its European network, with the German operations now displaying similar dynamism.

What Lussana Aims To Do

In his own words: “It is a privilege to be leading the sales house of ProSiebenSat.1 at this defining point for the company. … Aligning our activities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland closer to a European strategy will enable us to broaden our international reach, deliver greater value to our customers and create new growth opportunities.”

The top priorities likely are:

Enhanced global reach: Using P7S1’s presence and partnerships to provide pan-European solutions for advertisers and agencies, as opposed to local-only campaigns.

Data-driven, programmatic, multi-platform sales models: Adding more data-driven, programmatic, multi-platform sales models — blending linear TV, streaming, digital, addressable advertising. The press release highlights a “modern commercial approach for international and local advertisers and media agencies”.

Upping DACH business through transformation: Enhancing operational effectiveness, bringing Austria and Switzerland more closely together, utilizing technology and transformation (through the COO function) to facilitate scale.

Value proposition uplift: To media customers, providing richer insights, creative assistance and measurement — alluded to in the previous September restructuring (prior to this CEO hire) that saw the introduction of a “Commercial & Creative Intelligence” division.

Challenges & Considerations

Though the relocation is strategically prudent, there are some challenges to mention:

The German advertising market is mature and competitive. Incremental growth might be limited unless innovation fuels incremental growth (programmatic, addressable, non-linear).

Merging operations in DACH and connecting into wider European flows creates complexity (regulatory, language, client servicing).

Cultural integration: Hiring an executive with Italian media experience might need sensitive integration of local German-speaking market dynamics.

The wider media group is in the process of change of ownership and organisation — Seven. One Media will have to perform to justify the change.

Outlook

Under Nicola Lussana’s leadership, Seven. One Media is set to embark on its next phase: transitioning from a mainly German-language sales house to a European-capable, cross-platform ad commercial engine. Success will rest on how effectively it executes the transition to data-driven, integrated ad sales, growth beyond DACH, and takes advantage of its parent group’s transformation momentum. For advertisers and agencies, this might translate into access to more diversified, more advanced solutions; for shareholders, it presages a growth orientation.

Overall, this leadership hire is more than an administrative adjustment — it’s a strategic turning point for P7S1’s advertising business through Seven. One Media, aligning it with changing media habits, technology and advertiser needs throughout Europe.
