What Can Germany Expect from the Trump-Putin Meeting?
As Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin met in Alaska for high-stakes talks on ending the war in Ukraine, European leaders — particularly in Germany — were watching closely. The outcome of the summit could have major implications for the continent’s security.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has firmly aligned himself as one of Ukraine’s strongest backers in Europe. He has consistently supported Ukraine’s demands for a just peace and emphasized that any resolution must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
However, as Trump and Putin held talks without Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy present, concerns are growing across Europe — including in Berlin — about whether those demands are being taken seriously.
With no firm deal announced and Trump suggesting that Zelenskyy will now need to “get it done,” German leaders may feel increasingly sidelined in a process that could reshape Europe’s security landscape.
For now, Germany — like much of Europe — is left waiting for clarity on what was discussed behind closed doors, and what role it will be allowed to play in shaping the path to peace.
