Germany’s Foreign Minister: India is Vital to Indo-Pacific, Global Order and Democracy
Bengaluru: Germany has reaffirmed India’s growing importance in global affairs, with its Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Johann Wadephul, describing the country as a “key partner in the Indo-Pacific” ahead of his two-day official visit.
Wadephul arrived in Bengaluru on Tuesday morning to begin his visit, scheduled from September 2 to September 3, as announced by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Strengthening Economic and Security Cooperation
The German minister’s visit comes at a time when Berlin is looking to expand its footprint in the Indo-Pacific, with India seen as central to this vision. Discussions are expected to focus on deepening economic and security cooperation, enhancing technology partnerships, and exploring ways to jointly address regional and global challenges.
Germany has consistently underscored the importance of a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific. India’s position as both the world’s largest democracy and a rising economic power makes it a natural partner for Berlin’s Indo-Pacific strategy.
Expanding Technology and Talent Links
Another key theme of the visit is technology collaboration. Germany is keen to strengthen ties with India in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing. The visit also highlights Germany’s interest in attracting skilled professionals from India, addressing its own workforce needs while creating new opportunities for Indian talent abroad.
Shared Commitment to Democracy and Global Order
In his statement ahead of the visit, Wadephul emphasized that India’s role extends beyond economics and regional strategy. He described India as vital to “the global order and democracy,” signaling Berlin’s recognition of India as an essential voice in international governance, peace, and stability.
By engaging India more closely, Germany aims not only to reinforce bilateral ties but also to contribute to collective efforts in safeguarding democratic values and strengthening multilateral cooperation.
Looking Ahead
The two-day visit is expected to include high-level meetings with Indian leaders, business representatives, and innovators. It is anticipated that new pathways of cooperation will emerge, further cementing the India–Germany partnership as a cornerstone of engagement in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
