Leonhard Birnbaum — CEO, E.-ON SE

Leonhard Birnbaum is an important person in the energy business in Germany. He is the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Management of E.ON SE. Leonhard Birnbaum has been doing this job since 1 April 2021. During this time Leonhard Birnbaum has been helping E.ON SE through a change in the energy business in Europe. This change is about making energy cleaner updating the power grid and making sure people have access, to energy that’s safe and affordable. Leonhard Birnbaum and E.ON SE are working hard to make this happen.

Birnbaum was born on 19 February 1967 in Ludwigshafen, Germany. He has a technical foundation in chemical engineering because he studied it at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Birnbaum also earned a doctorate in engineering which gave him a lot of knowledge about energy systems and industrial processes. This education has been very important for Birnbaum as it helped him become a leader who makes decisions based on data. The energy industry is heavily regulated and costs a lot of money. Birnbaums technical background has helped him navigate these challenges as the leader of energy systems and industrial processes companies, like Birnbaum is involved with.

Birnbaum started working at McKinsey & Company. He became a partner and helped big energy and industrial companies all around the world. This job taught him a lot about making changes being efficient and planning, for the future.

Birnbaum worked with McKinsey & Company for a time. Then in 2008 he decided to do something. He joined RWE AG. Became a member of the executive board. At RWE AG Birnbaum learned what it is like to run utility businesses when the market is changing and becoming more open.

In 2013 Birnbaum became a part of E.ON SEs Board of Management. He was in charge of important areas like energy trading and customer solutions. Birnbaum also handled markets.

When Birnbaum took over as CEO from Johannes Teyssen in 2021 E.ON was already the energy networks and customer solutions company in Europe. This happened because E.ON changed its strategy and moved away, from power generation.

As the CEO Birnbaum always says that electricity grids are very important for the energy transition. He thinks they are the backbone that holds everything together. Under Birnbaums leadership E.ON has put a lot of money into distribution networks and digital grid technologies. They are also working on energy solutions. The goal is to help renewable energy grow quickly across Europe. Birnbaum often talks about how we need strong grids to meet our climate targets without spending too much money. Electricity grids are key, to making this happen says Birnbaum.

E.ON serves than 50 million customers in European countries today which makes E.ON one of the biggest utilities in Europe that people own.

Birnbaum is also a voice when it comes to policy discussions. He calls for rules that balance what E.ON wants for sustainability with being good, for the economy and making sure customers can afford it. E.ON needs to make sure that customers can afford what E.ON is offering.

Leonhard Birnbaum’s leadership reflects a blend of technical expertise, strategic clarity, and long-term thinking. As Europe accelerates its shift toward clean energy, his role at the helm of E.ON places him at the centre of one of the most critical economic and environmental transformations of this decade.
