German-Iranian Woman Nahid Taghavi Freed After Four Years in Iranian Prison

Freedom at Last: Nahid Taghavi Released From Tehran Prison

After over four years of imprisonment, Nahid Taghavi, a 70-year-old German-Iranian woman, has been released from a Tehran prison. Her daughter, Mariam Claren, shared the joyous news on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that her mother was finally free. Taghavi, who had been unjustly imprisoned by the Iranian authorities, is now back in Germany.

“It’s over. Nahid is free!” Mariam Claren wrote, sharing a powerful photo of her reunion with her mother. Taghavi’s release marks the end of a painful chapter for the family, who had endured the harsh realities of the Iranian justice system for years.

A Decade-Long Sentence for Defending Women’s Rights

Taghavi’s ordeal began in October 2020, when she was arrested in Tehran. She was later sentenced to 10 years in prison in August 2021 for charges related to national security and anti-government propaganda. These charges were reportedly connected to her social media activity advocating for women’s rights in Iran.

Despite Taghavi’s denial of the charges, the trial was widely regarded as unfair. Amnesty International condemned the proceedings, describing them as politically motivated and grossly unjust.

Conditions in Evin Prison: A Nightmare for Taghavi

During her detention at Evin Prison, a notorious facility in Tehran known for its harsh conditions, Taghavi’s health deteriorated significantly. She suffered from a range of health issues, including osteoporosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, and herniated discs. Despite these medical conditions, she was subjected to solitary confinement for seven months.

In the months following her arrest, Taghavi was subjected to physical and psychological abuse, including being forced to sleep on the floor. Amnesty International described the prison conditions as “cruel and inhuman”, with inadequate medical care available to detainees.

Taghavi was granted medical leave several times, most notably in July 2022, when she was given urgent leave to treat her back and neck issues. However, after receiving treatment, she was sent back to Evin Prison just four months later. This continued pattern of medical neglect and harsh conditions led fellow inmates, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, to warn that Taghavi’s life was in danger.

The Relief of Family and International Figures

News of Taghavi’s release has been met with relief and joy from her family and the international community. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock expressed her happiness on social media, writing, “A great moment of joy that Nahid Taghavi can finally embrace her family again.“

Despite the relief, Taghavi’s daughter, Mariam, pointed out the immense suffering her mother endured, saying, “Words cannot describe our joy, but at the same time, we mourn the four years that were stolen from us and the horror she had to endure in Evin prison.“

The Ongoing Fight for Justice

Taghavi’s case has drawn attention to the plight of dual nationals and political prisoners in Iran. Amnesty International continues to call on Iran to release all arbitrarily detained dual nationals and non-violent political prisoners. According to the human rights organization, dozens of dual nationals remain unjustly imprisoned in Iran, often facing politically motivated charges and inhumane treatment.

Taghavi’s release also comes at a tense time in German-Iranian relations. In October, Jamshid Sharmahd, another German-Iranian dual national, died in Iranian custody under suspicious circumstances. The death sparked a diplomatic dispute between Germany and Iran, with Baerbock ordering the closure of Iran’s consulates in Germany in response. Iran’s judiciary claimed that Sharmahd died before his death sentence could be carried out, but his family has expressed skepticism and called for an international investigation.

Looking Ahead: A Long Road to Accountability

While Taghavi’s release is a victory for human rights, it highlights the ongoing struggle for justice for other detainees in Iran. The release also underscores the cracks in diplomatic relations between Germany and Iran, with the two countries at odds over human rights abuses and the treatment of dual nationals.

Taghavi’s case is a reminder of the many political prisoners still behind bars in Iran, many of whom suffer in silence, denied the same freedom that Taghavi now enjoys.

Conclusion: A Personal and Political Triumph

Nahid Taghavi’s release marks a personal triumph for her family, who endured years of uncertainty, but it also serves as a stark reminder of the larger political struggles faced by many in Iran. As she reunites with her loved ones in Germany, the fight for justice for others like her continues.

Taghavi’s case will likely remain a focal point in the ongoing discussion about human rights and the treatment of political prisoners in Iran. For now, however, the Taghavi family can take solace in knowing that after more than four long years, Nahid is finally free.
