Telefónica Deutschland CEO Markus Haas to Step Down: A Strategic Shift in Germany’s Telecom Landscape

Telefónica Deutschland Holding AG has confirmed that CEO Markus Haas will resign from office, a major leadership transition for the Spanish telecoms group’s German unit. The move forms part of a wider strategic shake-up by Telefónica’s parent company, with a new strategy to be rolled out on November 4, 2025.

A Legacy of Leadership

Markus Haas has led Telefónica Deutschland since January 2017, having been with the company since 1998. He has played a central role in guiding the company’s strategy over time, including the integration of E-Plus, the successful IPO in 2012, and the rollout of a high-performance 5G network. Telefónica Deutschland under his guidance realized important milestones, such as the finalization of the integration of E-Plus and the achievement of extensive synergies.

In February 2025, the Supervisory Board renewed Haas’s contract through the year 2028, highlighting the company’s faith in his management.

The latest announcement shows a change in strategic direction causing a reversal of his contract early.

Strategic Realignment

Replacing Haas is one of a wide-ranging strategic review launched by Telefónica Chairman Marc Murtra. The new strategic plan to be presented on November 4 is designed to lay out new priorities for the company, especially in its major European markets. Germany, where Telefónica has a presence as O2, is one of Telefónica’s most significant markets outside Spain, both in terms of volume of customers and revenue.

The action also follows growing competition in the German telecom industry. Telefónica Deutschland is challenged by competitors like Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone, and losing a large-scale wholesale deal with 1&1 to Vodafone has hurt the company’s cash balance. The exit of Haas might be an indication of a strategic change towards consolidation or possible mergers in Germany.

The Path Forward

As Telefónica Deutschland starts this new chapter, efforts are being made to find a replacement for Haas. Telefónica Deutschland announced that Haas would stay on in his position until the next CEO took over, to provide continuity through this transition phase.

The future strategic plan is expected to tackle the changing challenges in the telecommunications sector, such as the necessity of innovation, cost-effectiveness, and improved customer experience. Telefónica stakeholders will keenly observe the manner in which it intends to handle the competitive situation in Germany and consolidate its presence in the European region.

In short, the exit of Markus Haas concludes an era for Telefónica Deutschland. With the company embarking on a new strategic direction, the succession embodies both a challenge and a chance to reshape its trajectory in the fast-paced telecommunications industry.
