India Seeks German Backing to Fast-Track EU Trade Talks, Aims to Double Bilateral Trade
New Delhi: India is banking on Germany’s support to strengthen its relationship with the European Union and accelerate progress in ongoing trade negotiations, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said on Wednesday.
During discussions with his German counterpart, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of Berlin’s role in shaping EU policy, noting that Germany’s backing could be instrumental in expediting a free trade agreement between India and the bloc. He also urged that bilateral trade between India and Germany be doubled in the coming years, building on the strong foundation of economic cooperation.
India and the EU have been engaged in trade talks for several years, but progress has often been slow due to differences on market access, tariffs, and regulatory issues. With Germany being Europe’s largest economy and a key political player, New Delhi sees Berlin as a vital partner in pushing forward negotiations that could open new opportunities for businesses on both sides.
Beyond trade, the partnership also spans technology, green energy, and skilled workforce exchanges, areas where both nations have identified significant potential for collaboration.
Analysts believe that stronger India–Germany coordination could give new momentum to the India–EU trade agreement, positioning both countries as drivers of economic growth and strategic stability in an increasingly interconnected world.
