Europe’s Energy Revolution Begins Below the Surface as Hades Mining Raises €5.5M to Drill Deeper Than Ever

A Munich-based startup is making headlines across the energy and tech industries after emerging from stealth mode with a bold mission and fresh funding. Hades Mining, a deep-tech company focused on unlocking ultra-deep geothermal energy and critical mineral deposits, has raised €5.5 million in pre-seed funding. This early round is set to power the development of next-generation drilling systems designed to reach depths that conventional technologies simply cannot.

The funding round was led by Project A, a well-known European venture capital firm, with backing from Visionaries Tomorrow, Founders Factory, and several high-profile strategic angel investors from the aerospace, energy, and manufacturing industries. These include Florian Seibel, Roman Hölzl, Daniel Wiegand, Moritz von der Linden, Hélène Huby, Dr Nicolas Burkardt, and the Viessmann Generations Group.

Hades Mining was founded in 2025 by Dr Max Werner, Björn Dressler, and Dan Gengenbach. The trio brings together expertise in geoscience, deep-tech engineering, and venture operations. Their goal is to transform how Europe sources its energy and minerals by developing a new generation of drilling and subsurface access systems that are both technologically advanced and environmentally responsible.

The company is targeting ultra-deep geothermal reserves and mineral deposits that are currently beyond the reach of traditional drilling methods. These deep layers of the Earth hold vast, untapped potential for clean energy production and essential raw materials, yet remain largely inaccessible due to technological limitations, high costs, and environmental concerns. Hades Mining aims to change that.

Europe is at a critical turning point in its energy journey. The continent is racing to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and foreign-controlled energy supplies. At the same time, the demand for critical minerals such as lithium and rare earth elements is surging. These materials are essential for renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, semiconductors, and battery storage. Without them, the clean energy transition is simply not possible.

Yet much of Europe’s current supply comes from politically unstable or adversarial regions. That leaves governments and companies vulnerable to disruption, delays, and price volatility. Hades Mining believes the solution lies beneath Europe’s own soil—if the right tools exist to reach it.

To do this, the startup is building what it describes as a new class of drilling technology. These systems are engineered from the ground up to operate at previously unreachable depths, with the precision, automation, and speed typically associated with cutting-edge software companies. But unlike traditional mining firms, Hades Mining is integrating sustainability and transparency into its operations from day one.

The company’s founders say their goal is not just to drill deeper but to rethink how subsurface resources are accessed and managed. By bringing every stage of the process—from licensing and permitting to production and monitoring—under a single, integrated platform, they aim to streamline operations and reduce environmental and regulatory friction.

Hades Mining’s drilling systems will be designed to minimize surface disruption, reduce energy consumption, and limit waste production. Advanced automation and AI will be used to improve safety, optimize drilling paths, and track performance in real-time. The result is a high-performance system capable of addressing energy security and resource independence without sacrificing long-term sustainability.

Dr Max Werner, co-founder and CEO, described the company’s vision as both ambitious and urgent. In his words, Europe cannot lead the global energy transition while remaining dependent on others for the core materials that power modern life. Hades Mining wants to offer a solution that is fast, scalable, and responsible.

The €5.5 million in funding will be used to accelerate research and development, grow the engineering team, and begin field testing of its core drilling technology. The startup is also forming partnerships across the public and private sectors, including with governments, energy companies, and infrastructure providers interested in securing domestic access to clean energy and minerals.

What makes Hades Mining unique is not just the technology it’s developing, but the mindset it brings to the resource extraction industry. By combining the speed and innovation culture of a tech company with the long-term thinking of an energy infrastructure provider, the team believes it can build a new model for how underground resources are discovered and delivered.

The challenge is significant. Drilling at depths of five to ten kilometers involves extreme conditions, including high pressure and temperatures that most existing tools cannot withstand. It also presents economic risks, as ultra-deep projects are historically slower and more expensive. But with the right blend of innovation, automation, and scale, Hades Mining believes it can overcome these hurdles and unlock resources that have remained dormant for decades.

If successful, the company could open up entirely new supply chains within Europe, making the region more resilient to global shocks and more self-sufficient in its clean energy goals. The technology also has potential applications beyond Europe, in markets where deep geothermal energy and mineral scarcity are top concerns.

As governments across the EU roll out stricter rules around foreign energy dependence and increase investments in green infrastructure, startups like Hades Mining are stepping into the spotlight. Their ability to move fast, experiment boldly, and think long-term makes them well positioned to take on some of the continent’s biggest energy and resource challenges.

While still early in its journey, Hades Mining is clearly aiming big. The backing of respected investors, a strong founding team, and a laser focus on critical problems make this a startup worth watching. In a world increasingly defined by energy uncertainty and mineral bottlenecks, the next big breakthrough may come from deep below the surface—and Hades Mining wants to be the one to find it.
