Germany’s Border Checks Have Cost Over €80 Million, Reports Say
Germany’s intensified border checks, introduced to fight irregular migration and crime, have come with a hefty price tag: over €80 million.
According to reports in German newspapers, the checks — which began in September 2024 — have cost the government €80.5 million (about $94 million) so far. The policy was launched as part of efforts to curb illegal entry and cross-border crime, particularly along Germany’s borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Switzerland.
While the effectiveness of the checks continues to be debated, the financial impact is now in sharp focus.
In addition to border policy developments, Germany is also enduring extreme weather conditions. Southwestern regions are facing another day of sweltering heat, with temperatures expected to reach up to 37°C (98.6°F).
The heat wave has stretched across much of Europe this week, with scorching temperatures recorded on Tuesday and Wednesday as well.
